I am an educator and strong advocate for diversity, equity and inclusive education. I have been a teacher for over three decades – having arrived in Canada from my native South Africa 16 years ago. Growing up as a woman of colour under apartheid, has instilled a passion in me for diversity in the classroom – and of teaching that allows learners of all backgrounds to be integrated into Canada’s school system.
The discrimination that both my family and I faced when growing up as non-white people in South Africa during the apartheid years has motivated me to ensure that my students eventually lead independent and fulfilling lives. I feel this need for inclusiveness and equality for all students so none of them should ever be discriminated against because of their exceptionalities. My primary goals for them are independence, interaction with their peers, and interaction with their teachers so that when they leave St Mary’s they are able to function in their community.
Here at St Mary’s High School our motto is:
Bound by Respect
Bound by Acceptance
Bound by Faith
For us to live out our school motto, we have to accept everybody. One of my goals at St. Mary’s is to create awareness of the importance of inclusiveness.
